Located right in the heart of Queens, SCS offers a range of life-enhancing programs that benefit approximately 14,000 individuals per year. From Early Childhood Education to Senior Services, we provide programs for all ages.
We rely on the support of our volunteers to serve thousands of people each year. We offer a variety of opportunities to use your time and talents to give back to the community. Volunteer opportunities include:
Youth Services
Provide tutoring and assistance with homework or educational enrichment activities. SCS youth programs serve young people in pre-school through college.
Senior Services
Assist in preparing or serving meals in the senior center, or teach a class on a topic that interests you. Help screen seniors for benefits and entitlement programs, or provide assistance in our adult day services program for cognitively or physically impaired seniors.
Friendly Visiting
Visit homebound older adults who are in need of companionship and a friendly face. We match volunteers based on geographic location and shared interest. During the visit, volunteers and seniors might play board or card games, discuss current events, make photo albums, or share memories. All of our Friendly Visiting volunteers must be willing to make a six-month commitment to the program.
Pet Pals
Help homebound seniors and their caregivers to provide basic care for household pets and companionship for the family. Volunteers walk dogs, shop for pet supplies, take pets to the vet, and more.
Administrative Support
Help all of SCS’ programs by providing assistance with essential administrative tasks such as filing and data entry.

Annual Daily News Food Drive with City Harvest
At a time when nearly one in five New Yorkers struggle to put meals on their tables regularly, daily deliveries from City Harvest are vital to keeping the shelves of food pantries and soup kitchens stocked. This holiday season, we invite you to help fill our truck with good food by participating in the 34th annual Daily News Food Drive. The Daily News Food Drive is the largest in the city and, with your help, we will collect one million pounds of nutritious, non-perishable food which City Food Harvest will deliver to 500 soup kitchens, food pantries and other community food programs across five boroughs.

The Daily News Food Drive will run from Wednesday, November 9, 2016 through Friday, December 9, 2017. Thank you for standing with us in the fight against hunger, and for helping fill plates of our neighbors this holiday season.

Discovery Guides in training are also highly encouraged to volunteer on either Saturday March 26th or Sunday March 27th, 2016 for our Spring Egg-Stravaganza event.

Star Learning Center, a program of Goddard Riverside Community Center, is seeking volunteer tutors for our 2015 summer session. The seven-week program runs from June 29th throughAugust 14th. Located at 26 West 84th Street in Manhattan, Star provides one-to-one tutoring to low-income children from across the city. We are looking for volunteers who are interested in working with students from 2nd to 12th grade. Each tutor must be able to commit a two-hour block of time once a week for all seven weeks to be matched with a child. Tutoring takes placeMonday through Friday (Fridays until 12 noon only). We have evening hours until 7 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays.

- Assist children one-on-one and in small groups with assignments in math, science, social studies, and other topics, providing direction, clarity, and understanding.
- Instruct children in the use of directories, indexes, and other reference materials.
- Encourage the development of math skills through the use of Web-based technology.
- Promote the use of library resources by referring children to an on-staff specialist, when appropriate.
- A strong commitment to working with children.
- A friendly and approachable manner.
- The ability to get along with a diverse group of children.
- Knowledge of languages other than English, a plus.
- Training is provided.
- Shifts are available Monday - Thursday afternoons between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM at the Central Library and neighborhood libraries.
- Volunteers are asked to make a minimum commitment of two to three hours per week, for a period of at least six months.
- BPL will conduct an investigative background check on volunteers 18 and older, which may be used when considering a prospective volunteer's application.

Teen ACTION (“ACTION” is an acronym for Achieving Change Together In Our Neighborhoods), DYCD’s Service Learning program, is part of Mayor Bloomberg’s Center for Economic Opportunity (CEO) anti-poverty initiative, which has committed over $150 million annually to explore innovative approaches to poverty reduction. As of September 2011, DYCD is administering 17 Teen ACTION programs throughout the City. Each program offers participants the chance to engage in structured learning, service projects, and reflection.
