JKR/BARD HUMAN RIGHTS PROJECT SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM ON HATE
Starting in the summer of 2018, the JKR Foundation – in partnership with Bard College’s Human Rights Project – will be sponsoring summer internships for college-age students, who will work with Non Governmental Organizations (and other groups) that have a mission to combat hate.
Students enrolled in any college or university will be eligible to apply. Application information will be posted on this page in early 2018. The maximum stipend will be $3,000.
The internship project builds upon two successful prior Foundation summer internship programs (see here and here), but is more ambitious and structured.
PROGRAM DETAILS
Selected students will:
Participate in a multi-day seminar at Bard College in the spring of 2018, with students required to lead discussions based on text study of assigned scholarly and other materials about hate in general and specific manifestations of hatred (antisemitism, racism, homophobia, Islamophobia, etc.).
Agree to be mentored by the executive director of JKR and staff of HRP.
Work with an NGO or other organization selected by or agreed to by the JKR Foundation and Bard’s HRP. Whatever work the organization gives to the student must be related to hatred.
The other half of the student’s work will be researching and writing a substantial analysis of what the NGO’s presumptions about hate are, the research they rely on (if any), what other type of scholarship would be helpful to them, how and why they think what they are doing is effective, etc.
Over the summer the students must post twice weekly on a closed Google group, about what they are learning about hate and ways to combat it.
At the end of the summer the students will write a 15-20 page analysis of how the group with which they worked understood hate and its approach to the problem. They will also publish a shorter opinion piece about hate for either a local or school newspaper. Additionally, they will participate in a half-day video conference to share what they have learned with each other, and also speak to other students at their respective institutions.
Afterwards the fellows will be required to stay connected to the project and to each other via a listserv and occasional conference calls. This way they will not only help those who come after them, they – as professionals who may be focused on one type of hate (e.g. anti-immigrant) – would know many people working on other forms (e.g. antisemitism).

The Encampment Summer Leadership & Social Justice Program
The summer program is the heart of the Encampment. It is a true experience in democracy where young people who would otherwise never meet
What Happens at the Summer Program?
Experiential Learning: Encampers live, learn, and work together in a diverse group of fellow youth. As Encampers participate in workshops, field trips, and community activities, they encounter viewpoints different from their own and begin to question and think critically about issues that are woven throughout our daily lives and reflected in the larger society. Staff are available 24/7 to help youth make the link between interpersonal issues and societal issues. Once Encampers internalize this method of questioning everything – not accepting what is presented at face value – they have a life-long skill adaptable to all life situations.
Community Engagement: Encampers typically engage in a community project. It is accompanied by workshops that provide historical, political and social context. For example, Encampers, including several from farmworker families, interviewed growers; met with representatives from the United Farm Workers Union; worked in the fields; and spoke with youth in a farmworker residence. This project led participants to look at global systems of food distribution, immigration and labor issues, and environmental sustainability. The Encampers – farmworker youth as well as Encampers who had never considered who put food on their tables – gained an understanding that was both personal and political and remained with them.
Youth Development: Encampers are supported by a five-point youth development framework focused on safety, relationship-building, youth participation, community involvement, and skill-building. Skills include facilitation, workshop development, public speaking, governance, conflict resolution and group decision-making.
Participatory Action Research:Encampers do self-directed research on issues important to them, supported by guest speakers, field experiences, and staff facilitators. Encampers may investigate issues such as institutionalized racism, sexism, classism, heteronormativity, and other forms of oppression, as well as other issues that affect their communities and the world around them.
The Arts and Social Media: Encampers use music, theater, and visual arts to express and interpret their experiences. They will explore social media as an organizing tool to gather and spread ideas and information.

8th Annual Crossroads Leadership Conference
Hosted by Columbia University's Asian American Alliance, the conference aims to analyze and explore what it means to be Asian American in this day and age. We hope to provide delegates with information, history, leadership skills, and a network of peers from which they can benefit to become the next generation of empowered and conscious leaders. How do we nurture our passions and identities in a country that still perpetuates so many stereotypes about Asian Americans? What is our place as Asian Americans in 2016, in light of all the recent events regarding race happening all over the world? These are just some of the questions the Crossroads team wants to create a space to address, especially as an introduction for high school students. The Conference is held at Barnard College of Columbia University in Barnard Hall on Saturday March 26th from 10:00 am- 5:00 pm. For more information and to apply visit: www.aaacrossroads.org.

CCC is a multi-issue child advocacy organization that seeks to ensure that every child is healthy, housed, educated, and safe. YouthAction NYC engages New York City youth from diverse backgrounds in civic participation and advocacy. Students who participate in the YCLC will:
- Gain the skills to advocate on behalf of themselves, their schools, and their communities.
- Learn how to conduct hands-on research, such as public polling and site visits.
- Meet with government officials to discuss their ideas for improving New York City.
- Become better leaders through problem solving and critical thinking.
- Strengthen their communication and public speaking skills.
- Make lifelong friends with the diverse group of peers in the program!
The Fall 2015 YCLC will begin on Monday, October 19th. Because space is limited, I urge you to disseminate the attached information to students and families as soon as possible. Attached you will find a) a flyer to hang and distribute; b) a letter with more information for school and/or community leaders; c) a separate letter for guardians; d) a permission slip and; e) an application for the students to fill out and return to me no later than Friday, October 2nd, 2015.
