BGC Lab for Teen Scholars
This July, Bard Graduate Center in Manhattan will pilot its first program for teens. The BGC Lab for Teen Scholars is designed to be a hands-on introduction to museum life and the study of objects. Structured like a fellowship this is a paid opportunity for you to gain hands on experience in both a research institute and a working gallery!
The two part program will begin as a summer intensive in our Gallery; for five weeks the 10 selected students will meet 4 days a week from Monday-Thursday, they will learn, through interactions with Gallery staff, educators, guest teachers, and behind the scenes visits to other museums, about the study, display and cultural importance of objects. The second part of the program will take place during the 2017 fall semester. The students will each be paired with a faculty advisor who will work with each student one on one to develop a 500 word object study, which could serve as a portfolio piece on a college application and may also be published on our website as our Object of the Month.

We would like to invite you and your class to visit the Democracy Now! studio for an extraordinary learning experience. Your students will enter the control room of this daily news show minutes before going on air, watch the live broadcast, and participate in a workshop, where the need for independent news and investigative reporting will be discussed. If time allows the host of the show and show guests will join the conversation. Afterward students will go on a behind-the-scenes tour, where they will be introduced to the daily process of producing a news program. The free field trip is a great way to promote students critical thinking skills and teach them media literacy.

Sadie Nash Leadership Project (SNLP), a successful educational and leadership program for young women in New York City public high schools. We believe that every young woman is a leader and offer free programs and classes to further develop that leadership. We are excited to share an exciting upcoming opportunity for your students for Fall 2015: Leadership Institute, a year-long, after-school program for high school aged young women. Classes will incorporate both community building and intensive leadership development as well as integrate college awareness, health and self-care, and increased communication skills. Participants will receive an end-of-year stipend based on their participation and attendance in the group, and are eligible to receive school credit . We are focused on the intellectual and personal development of young women, but our programming also provides greatly needed networking opportunities, boosts college applications and provides young women with a safe, enriching, and creative after-school experience. Young women can choose from three tracks: Making Waves! This class is focused on social justice organizing, activism, and social change! During the class, participants examine social justice issues in their lives and community, explore historical and contemporary women leaders, and learn about social justice movements. They explore theories of social change and develop a social justice project of their own while getting to know more about local government, local leaders, and relevant social justice campaigns in New York City. NYC Making Waves will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 – 6:00pm in midtown Manhattan near Bryant Park. Sisterhood Academy! This class will focus on identity, leadership development, career and life options, healthy relationships, mental, physical, and emotional wellness, and creative self-expression. Using their own lives and experiences as a starting point, young women will examine their identities, explore their families and communities, and critically discuss issues facing young women. They will also build practical skills and knowledge on issues such as health, financial literacy, college awareness, stress management, job readiness. Through a variety of creative means (spoken word, art, and creative writing), they will also work to express their thoughts and disseminate their knowledge to their peers. Sisterhood Academy will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 – 6:00pm in midtown Manhattan near Bryant Park. Leadership Scholars! This is a college support class for 11th graders. The group will focus on issues of educational justice and college readiness and college prep. The educational justice aspect of the c lass will examine such questions as: What makes a good school, and why aren’t all schools good? What is a “good education” and how can you fight for your right to one? Participants will also receive support, guidance, information around your own college plans and take a couple of college trips . Young people learn about what colleges are looking for, how to apply, what options to consider so they can begin the journey towards college today! Open to juniors only. Leadership Scholars will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 – 6:00pm in midtown Manhattan near Bryant Park. We are currently accepting applications for all three tracks. I have attached application forms that can be printed, or youth can apply online here. Applications are due on Wednesday, September 30th, 2015 and youth will be invited to a short interview session once we have reviewed their applications. We are also hosting Open Houses on Satur day, September 12 at 1:30pm; Thursday, Sept ember 17at 4pm; and Wednesday, September 21, at 4 pm in Midtown Manhattan at 4 West 43rd Street, Suite 502, New York, NY 10036. Youth must RSVP to attend the open houses here. We can also come to your school/site to conduct a brief presentation for youth, or participate in Fall after school fairs! Please contact us early for your event. There are no academic or skill criteria for admission into our programs. We look for young women who do not have other opportunities like Sadie Nash, who are interested in building a community with their peers and want to develop their leadership. Please contact me with any additional questions. You can reach me at 212.391.8664 or [email protected].
