No Bees No Food Campaign Internship Program
Location: Manhattan, NY (West Midtown/Garment District)
Term: We are looking to hire interns immediately, to work through August
Hours: Minimum 10 hours per week
Campaign Description: Environment New York is one of 30 branches of Environment America. Environment America was founded in 2007 and is a part of the larger Fund for the Public Interest, which is a national nonprofit organisation that has been organising grassroots campaigns since 1982. The Fund was founded out of Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group (MASSPIRG)'s effort to pass the Bottle Bill in the state as a way to incentivise recycling when most Americans were unaware of the importance of keeping plastic bottles and aluminum cans out of our oceans and landfills (http://www.masspirg.org/issues/map/updating-bottle-bill). Since its founding, The Fund has raised over $500 million on behalf of progressive social and environmental causes, including to stop the overuse of antibiotics on factory farms and to get fracking banned in New York state. To do this, we have talked to over 20 million Americans over the past 34 years and gathered petition signatures from them to present to our legislators and make real change on the policy level.
Environment New York is currently working on a campaign at the national level to stop the use of a class of pesticides that kill some of our key pollinators, such as honeybees and butterflies, called neonicotinoids (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neonicotinoid#Decline_in_bee_population). Bees pollinate roughly 71% of the crops Americans eat on a regular basis, and without bees we would lose everything from coffee to strawberries, and even the hay we feed to our dairy cows.
We are standing up to large chemical corporations, namely Monsanto, Bayer, Dow and Syngenta, who are working to increase the use of neonics by more than 400 times in order to make more money, as neonics are cheap and effective. Our goal is to convince the Environmental Protection Agency to greatly speed up the testing of neonicotinoids before November, when the USA will be electing a new president; we have no idea if the new EPA will be progressive enough to make a big enough impact on this mass bee die-off, and we need to act quickly to preserve our food supply for decades to come. No bees means no food!
Job Activities/Scope: Interns and volunteers will provide support to all aspects of our campaign, including volunteer recruitment, leadership development, event planning, and grassroots visibility tactics. Interns will have the opportunity to work on the issue in surrounding communities across NYC and New York State.

Urban Roots Youth Leaders
Interested in learning more about how to grow food in the city? This Spring, City Growers is launching The Urban Roots Youth Leaders – a training program for high school students at the Brooklyn Grange Rooftop Farm in Long Island City! The program runs after-school two days a week during the spring and will introduce the different aspects of planning and managing an urban farm, followed by the opportunity to apply for a paid summer internship as a youth farm educator with the City Growers team.
The spring cycle will engage participants in comprehensive learning ranging from hands-on training in composting and cultivation to group discussions and lessons that delve into food systems, nutrition and food access. Participants will also pursue personal projects focusing on a topic of their choosing that they would like to specialize in, and identify goals and benchmarks for themselves during the spring season. Upon completing the spring program, participants will receive a Certificate of Urban Agriculture, highlighting their area of expertise.
Following the spring season, participants will be eligible for paid internships with the City Growers team of youth educators. This program, spanning June through August, will focus on peer education and enable participants to put into action the skills and knowledge they have developed during the spring cycle. Teaching Interns will shadow, co-teach, and eventually lead workshops at the Brooklyn Grange flagship farm in Long Island City for visiting summer camps and Saturday Family Farm Day activities.
